General dentistry and cosmetic dentistry

What many people don’t realise is there are two main fields in dentistry. One is called general dentistry and the other cosmetic dentistry. Although many modern dentists now practice in both fields of these different kinds of dentistry, there goals are somewhat different, one is about the general wellbeing of your oral hygiene and the other is about the appearance of your mouth.images (1)

So what are these different types of dentistry? And what does each form of dentistry involve?

General Dentistry

Where most of us are concerned general dentistry is the most common form dentistry, general dentistry is when we go for our check-ups, or have problems with our teeth and gums.  Working closely with the patient your general dentist will formulate and develop a customised dental plan to keep your mouth and general oral hygiene up to scratch. Also the general dentist’s role is that of prevention, diagnosis and treatments of tooth related diseases such as tooth decay and gum disease. During an examination, which your general dentist recommends two times a year, the dentist may take x-rays and use other diagnostic equipment to find underlying problems with your teeth, gums, jaw and face and fix the problems before they get worse.

Cosmetic dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is more concerned about the appearance of your mouth and teeth not necessarily your oral health or wellbeing. This can include many techniques and procedures to give you a perfect smile. If you have gaps in your teeth or missing teeth or misaligned teeth your cosmetic dentist can improve all of this by applying different techniques such as teeth whitening which involves the dentist applying safe bleach to the surface of your teeth to make them whiter. Other treatments can include dental implants which replace missing teeth, dental veneers which cover up gaps and misaligned teeth, your cosmetic dentist can even do what’s called a full smile makeover which can involve many procedures so you can achieve the smile you all ways wanted.

Although general dentistry is the most important to maintain oral health, cosmetic dentistry is becoming ever more popular amongst the people of Britain wanting to improve the overall appearance of their mouths.
